PROJECT: St John's College School

LOCATION: Cambridge

DATE: 2006 - ongoing

Planning permission has been gained for the redevelopment of classroom buildings and a new library on the Senior House site of St John's College School in Cambridge.

At present the classroom accommodation has to be shared for the teaching of different subjects and has both a pastoral and storage function. Rethinking how the pastoral spaces function and how they can be separated from the subject-based classrooms became a critical element of the brief.

Each classroom, in our proposal, is expressed as its own little building, with an individual roof form. They are designed internally and externally with timber as this creates a warm and natural environment in which to teach. The new library will be at the heart of the school community with views across the site.
